Siti Suriani Othman, PhD is a Senior Lecturer in the Communication Programme, Faculty of Leadership and Management, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM). She obtained her PhD from Nottingham Trent University in 2012, her Master’s degree from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and her Bachelor from Universiti Teknologi MARA.
Her research interest is in Malaysian print and online journalism and has published extensively in these areas. She was appointed as visiting professor at the School of Journalism and Communication, Xiamen University, China (2015); Visiting Scholar at Xiamen University Malaysia (2016); and Visiting Professor at Universitas Syiah Kuala, Aceh, Indonesia (2017). She has also been awarded with more than 40 awards at various levels including Best Young Lecturer (2015), Best Social Science Lecturer (2013, & 2014), Best English Journal Article (2015) and Gold Medal Award for Teaching and Learning Innovation (2017), (2018). Other awards include Book Award, Popular Writing Award, Best Journal Article in Malay language (university level) in 2018 and Best Paper Award and Best Extended Abstract Award in NACOSS IV Conference in 2019, and various publication awards in 2020 until 2022.
She is also recognized nationally and appointed as Guest Writer of the National Professor’s Council (2017-2018) and one of the judges of prestigious journalism awards at the state and national levels. As a former columnist of a national newspaper in Malaysia known as Berita Harian, she has been writing in various newspapers and magazines since 14 years old, and currently published more than 400 feature stories in Malaysia, China and Taiwan.
Her interest in writing (but unlimited to academic writing) has encouraged her to establish USIM Writers’ Pool (UWP) in 2017 and currently the Founding Director of UWP with the aim to encourage academia to publish beyond academic writing and contribute back to the society through democratization of knowledge.
