Abstract
WORKERS IN THE PLATFORM ECONOMY - PERSPECTIVES FROM SOUTHEAST ASIA
WORKERS IN THE PLATFORM ECONOMY - PERSPECTIVES FROM SOUTHEAST ASIA
Digital labour platforms offer workers a sense of control, better income and greater flexibility as compared to the formal choice of employment. What constitutes a ‘good work’ has considerably changed due to this new business and employment model. While there are extensive literatures with regard to the transparency and accountability of platform economy to the workers, particular issues regarding matching and intermediaries within the digital infrastructure, network effects and monopoly power of the tech giants over the workers in Southeast Asia is little explored. This talk aims to explores the growth and opportunities of digital platform economy in this region. It argues that there is a lack of transparency and algorithmic management of the platform economy which has affected the working condition of the workers – mostly represented by less educated groups and precarious millennials. By looking into the economics of the platform economy, it finds that the platforms tend to arbitrage around the existing employment rules. Several case studies, within and outside this region is discussed to shed new lights about the decent working condition to those workers. It concludes that there must be a new model of worker protection in the platform economy in this region which also ensures the protection of consumers and market.
